Zephyrus

‘Hanuel!’ cried Alya. ‘Please, wake up!’

Hanuel had no choice, he came back from wherever he’d been, acutely and instantly aware that he was wet through and apparently floating in the sea. His head rested back against Alya’s collar bone and his arms were flung out to his sides.

‘Alya,’ he groaned, trying to coordinate his sore limbs. He raised his head and immediately gasped at the pain in his side.

‘You fell,’ she explained, as the waves splashed in her face. Her wings were spread out to the sides, keeping them afloat but she was still gasping at the coolness of the seawater as the swaying motion as the waves bobbed them back and forth.

‘Hanuel, we have to get out before the storm comes. Can you feel that the air has changed?’

Hanuel looked up at the sky as the Continent One sea birds sensed it too and returned to the safety of dry land after a day’s fishing. The sun had gone behind the clouds that had just started to arrive, and there was a distinct chill in the air. In a few short moments, the waves had already become choppier as a cool wind pushed to shore.

‘Hanuel, can you take-off?’ said Alya.

Hanuel decided that her voice sounded a bit panicked and he’d probably be wise to get on board. They were in the sea, one-hundred-miles from shore with a storm approaching … and he was injured.

‘Yes,’ he struggled into an upright position, spreading his wings out to the side and stabilising like Alya.

‘Good,’ she said, happier that he was now alert and upright.

They faced each other and Alya counted him in waiting for the water to swirl into the crest of a wave around her, to aid them, as he prepared first for take-off.

‘Hanuel,’ said Alya, startled when Hanuel winced violently before he’d even begun. ‘Is it that bad?’

‘My ribs are broken, Alya. That brute Raiden has broken my ribs. I can feel them grating where he smashed them. Alya,’ gasped Hanuel, ‘it’s hard to breathe.’

‘Shit!’ cried Alya. ‘Are your wings ok? Hanuel?’

‘My wings are fine, but I have broken ribs, Aly, I’m not gonna make it out of this water.’

Alya raised her eyebrows, her eyes widened in fear and she hoped Hanuel hadn’t noticed.

‘It’s ok, Hanuel. You just need a little boost that’s all. Once you’re in the air I will fly below you, like we’re in training school, you know, when they put an adult below you and you fly in tandem. I can take a lot of your weight until we get back to the pod.’

‘The pod?’

‘Yeah, we can’t go all the way home, we have to go the shortest route to safety and then radio the mainland.’

‘Ok, ok,’ nodded Hanuel, realising they were out of time, and out of options.

He gathered himself and waited until Alya was behind him to boost him out of the water.

She came around and steadied herself counting him in. Hanuel swirled the water with his wings barely able to see through the pain but he kept going, his wings stirring in preparation.
